The story of Steven Lucas, who was convicted of killing his mother for his inheritance, has been the subject of numerous true crime television shows. Episodes of Forensic Files and City Confidential featuring the case have been re-broadcasted dozens of times over the past decade.

As a reporter for the Tyler Morning Telegraph, I covered two trials in which jurors contemplated all the evidence against Lucas. His first trial in Tyler, Texas, ended in a hung jury. His second trial was moved to Dallas because of extensive publicity. He was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
